Keeping Up With The Holidays!

Keeping Up With The Holidays!

Ahh December!  How did you get here so fast?

I stopped by to let you know about some of my decor around the house.  I was so excited to decorate.  Its my first house with my NEW husband.  It was a lot of fun shopping to grab things for the house to make it our own.

This is our tree.  AHH Im obsessed.  We got the tree on black friday over at Home Depot.  It was just $129!!  Its 7.5 ft, pre lit and even comes with a music box that plays Christmas music!  Seriously what a steal.  I saw trees for over $300.  Crazy.  So happy with our purchase!

Do you scope out our tv stand?

Dont you love it.  I think it came out so cute.  Our tv stand isnt the biggest so we tried to do as much as we can.  I am obsessed with our "Be Merry" banner.  I got it from a sweet friend Stacy!  Whenever I am thinking of something I need for the house or for a party, she is seriously the first person I contact!  Shes fast, creative and so sweet! I spoke with her Monday and got my banner on Friday.  AMAZING!

Stacy has her own Etsy Shop  too!  To grab this kind of banner click here to take you there!  Or to check out what else is in her shop (trust me youll want to visit) click here to see what other creative things she has!  Here is a closer look of the banner

Yup!  Just love it. =)

Here is something I have in the kitchen that makes me smile whenever I pass it.

When I saw it, I had to grab it.  Unfortunately it was not on sale when I bought it but well worth the buy!

What kind of decorations do you have up?

Stop by next week to see what this little guy has been up too!

He stopped by last week and like usual, he is up to NO good!  Check back to see where hes been around the class this year. =)

Keeping Chickens Cool

Keeping Chickens Cool

I have been getting a lot of traffic lately to this post from last summer about how I keep my chickens cool so I thought Id put up a quick little refresher for everyone. I am not a chicken expert by any means but have come across so many great tips and tricks from other chicken owners that we have incorporated for our girls. Because it is always in the triple digits here during the summer and early fall months, we strive to keep our girls as comfortable as possible.

Our chicken essentials for summer:
  • Plenty of shade. It is important that chickens have lots of shady spots to enjoy during the heat of summer and our coop and chicken yard is shaded throughout the day.
  • Plenty of fresh water. Our girls have three different water sources available to them. I dont know if its true but I have been told that chickens dont like to walk through direct sunlight on a super hot day to access water so weve got water placed in all of their favorite hangouts.
  • Ventilation. Our coop has plenty of ventilation to help keep air moving. We also ran electrical to our coop last summer and installed a fan in the ceiling that is now on 24/7.
  • We have 4 large terracotta plant saucers in their "chicken yard" and fill them with fresh water each morning and afternoon. The girls love to stand in them and wet their feet. We also like to freeze milk cartons and large plastic bottles with water and place them in the saucers to keep them cool.
  • No scratch. I dont give the chickens any scratch treats in the summer no matter how hard they beg for it. Their bodies have to work too hard to break scratch down which causes them to heat up.
  • The best investment we have made in keeping our girls comfortable is a $10 dollar portable mister from the local hardware store. It attaches to our hose and we keep it on during the hottest parts of the day in their chicken yard. The girls love it and spend the majority of the afternoon hanging out underneath the mist.
  • Occasionally well make the girls veggie popsicles. Well chop up leftover veggies from the garden and place them in a tupperware container filled with water. Freeze and then let them enjoy.

If you have any tried and true tips youd like to share, please do. Were always looking for new ideas to keep the chickens happy and comfortable.

L I F E Garment Care Keeping White Clothes White

L I F E Garment Care Keeping White Clothes White

Under the guise of garment care here is a little post about how I keep my white clothes crispy white and bright.
I rather spend as little time of my life as possible working on household chores, so lets not call this a laundry routine shall we? Oops, too late for that now.

/ washing
-Separate your laundry. Incorrect laundry sorting will make your clothes look dingy. So make sure you fill your washing machine with whites only, even light grey and
pastel garments will lose some of their dye in the washing process, and these dyes will cling on to your white fabrics.
-Make sure you read the labels, wash delicate fabrics like silk and wool separately by hand.
-The non delicate fabrics, specially cottons and linens can be washed in high temperatures (unlike colorful garments, that will lose their color in too hot water).
-A few minutes into the washing cycle, add some diluted bleach with water. I just use a little splash of about 50ml with 3 times as much water.
Dont throw in the bleach directly, it is a strong chemical that can damage the fabric or cause uneven stains. A less toxic alternative is to add baking soda and vinegar instead.

/ wearing
-What I do to keep my sweatshirts stain free is turn them inside out before I dig into that bowl of spaghetti. It works! And keeps the eventual splatters of tomato sauce on the inside and out of sight!
-It can be hard to wear long floor sweeping wide trousers in autumn or fall. At the end of the day the bottom can look quite disgusting. Best is to save these styles for dryer seasons.
-Besides stains, white garments tend to get dingy on for example the cuffs of the sleeves. To keep your clothes looking crisp and clean, one must take a bit more drastic measures;
Touch less. It may seem like an impossible task, but it is just a little change of habits. I stopped leaning against the glass walls at the tram stop, dont rest my wrists on the shop
counters anymore and dont open doors in public spaces by leaning against them with my whole body arms and elbows. All these places rub off a tiny bit of dirt,
which will make your clothes grimy at the end of the day. This specially helps for items like coats and jackets that dont get washed often, it can even save you an extra trip to the dry cleaners.

Hey! Long time no see! Managing a job, social life and blogging has been real difficult for me in the last month. Im still trying to get used to the idea that Im a dentist.

Lets talk about todays outfit! I chose basic but elegant pieces and spiced it up with accessories.
I think a camel coat with a white shirt and jeans will look timeless in every season and in the years to come! I also believe in investing in quality garments. A good example for that is my vintage silk scarf which was my grandfathers and its more than fifty years old. I think that basic pieces like a good white shirt, a good wool coat and a soft cashmere jumper are worth investing in.

What do you think? What are you investing in this season?

P.S.: Dont forget about our promotional code, use "chocolatefashioncoffeeDW" on the DanielWellington site for 15% off!

Have a lovely day!

Keeping Up Is Hard To Do!

Keeping Up Is Hard To Do!

And just like that, its November and I havent blogged since September.  This year is kicking my butt with paperwork, new house, new husband (hehe) , etc.  I am trying to stay above water.

I wanted to keep you posted on my latest events going on with my little ones.

This is our classroom door we decorated for Halloween.  My little ones worked so hard on it!  On the door is a picture of them holding a sign that says "We are Bully-Free".  Under their picture is a writing they had to complete on why its important to be bully-free.  Here are some really good ones:

This one is my favorite!

They did such a great job with their writing.

I love it so much that  I decided I am going to keep it up for a while.  Its so bright and catches a lot of attention. =) And we love positive attention. =)

We have been working on our turkeys and are pretty much done.  Take a look at some of our "Thankful Turkeys" from my TpT Store.

This little boy is sweet.  Look what hes thankful for!

Want to know why I am really busy?  Well we have been so busy with this newest addition to our family.

Our little baby Legend.  We named him after our favorite singer John Legend; in which one of his songs was our wedding song!  Heres another shot of him up to no good!

Do you think he could have any more toys?  LOL  We got him a few weeks ago and boy is he a handful.  From peeing everywhere to biting everything, we can NOT leave him alone for a second.  Hes been taking up most of my time. =)   But hes SO worth it!

I have also been keeping a secret.  I have been working on something so big and important to me, I am just not ready to share.  Drop by on Sunday for more details on my sweet surprise!

Keeping the Chickens Cool

Keeping the Chickens Cool

One of my readers who raises chickens and also lives in the metro Phoenix area, asked if I could write up a blog post about my chicken coop set up and how we keep our chickens cool. We are well into the triple digit temps here and will be until October or November so the timing of this post is perfect. This is only our second summer with chickens but I have learned a lot about keeping chickens comfortable in the summer heat. You might remember reading that we lost dear Ramona last summer so were taking even more precautions this time around.

We have three areas of focus in keeping our girls cool: plenty of shade, ventilation, and fresh water at all times. Our coop is set up under three giant shade trees so the coop is never in direct sunlight at any time of the day. Although the chickens free range, their "chicken yard" also has plenty of shade should they choose to hang out there.  If you are thinking of keeping chickens yourself and live in a hot climate, its a good idea to ensure that the coop area will be well shaded during the warmer months.

Our coop was made out of a shed. When we built it, we left off one side and put up chicken wire (as you can see from the first picture). We also built a screen door out of chicken wire as well so that the coop has plenty of ventilation. Even with the ventilation, it still gets crazy hot and stuffy in there during the summer so my husband ran electrical and installed a fan in the coop. Its set on a timer and will run from about 11am to 3am. This should really get the air moving and keep the girls comfortable when theyre laying during the day or coming in to roost at night.

We also make sure that girls have plenty of fresh, cool water at all times. We have three sources available to them - in the coop, in the chicken yard, and on the back porch where they like to hang out (and stare at us through the sliding glass doors - which is totally odd). I was told that when its hot, chickens wont walk through direct, bright sunlight to get to their water source so its important to have a few sources available to them.

One of the best chicken investments we ever made was this 8 or so dollars portable mister from the local hardware store. It hooks right up to the hose in the chicken yard next to the coop. Whenever its 100+ degrees, we turn the mister on in the morning and shut it off at night when they go in to roost. The second I turn it on every morning, the girls run over and sit under it. They spend the majority of their day there. If you live in a hot climate, I highly recommend getting one of these suckers.

A recent email that I received from the Valley Permaculture Alliance suggested setting out shallow dishes (terra cotta pot saucers work great) and filling them with a couple of inches of water for the chickens to stand in on those insanely hot days. I definitely plan to give this a try. If you have any tips or tricks that you all use to keep your chickens cool, please share them with me.  Im not a big fan of fried chicken and want to keep the girls as comfortable as possible this summer.

ETA 7/18/11: Since I wrote this post I have discovered a couple of other ways to keep the girls cool that are very helpful. We have been trying the frozen water bottle in a plant saucer trick that I mentioned above and its been great. Occasionally the girls will stand in the water but more often than not, they drink from it and the water is always fresh and cold for them. They love it.

Another thing weve done is to make veggie pops. We have an abundance of veggies in our garden and always have a bit extra to share with the girls. We chop them up (usually cucumbers) and put them in a large tupperware container and then add water. We freeze these overnight and put one out for the girls during the hottest part of the day. They will spend a good chunk of time pecking at the ice block to get the veggies out.

Keeping Cool

Keeping Cool

Here in the Pacific Northwest we have been having a huge heat wave. Yesterday and today have been hotter weather than Ive ever experienced!

I havent had much energy to do much work. (I am so behind right now, I dont want to think about it! I havent even organized some vacation photos to share yet... Ill get to that soon!) We ran a lot of errands these past couple days. My car has air conditioning, unlike my house, so it was a nice escape! While at home, though, we survived on otter pops, ice water, and this:

Refreshing!

Keeping Airports Birds Free w Birds

Keeping Airports Birds Free w Birds

Birds have always been one of a planes worst enemies, why? Its because even a bird as small as a starlet can break the windshield of a plane taking-off or landing. Birds can also be sucked into engines causing severe damage. What makes it even worse is that an airport is paradise for birds. The flat land and wide expanses of mowed down grass fields can reveal many otherwise unseen prey.

Many airports use different methods to try to prevent an accident like what happened in October of 1960 when a passenger turboprop (a Lockheed Electra) flew into a flock of starlings shortly after departing from Bostons Logan International Airport, shutting down 3 out of the 4 engines and the Electra, without adequate power, crashed into Boston Harbor. Only 10 of the 72 on board survived, the most fatalities from a bird accident to date.

Surprisingly, one of the most effective ways of prevent birds straying into the skies above an airport is through other birds. Thats right, many airports use falconers who have trained birds-of-prey as a way to prevent a bird accident. One of them, Canadas busiest airport, Torontos Pearson Internaitonal Airport, even has a bald eagle named Ivan to scare off Canadian geese.

keeping a masculine office welcoming

keeping a masculine office welcoming

A friend of mine is moving into an office space after many years of working from home. The space is very small (150 square feet), but has a window and plenty of light. He purchased an antique bankers desk, and an ultra-modern black leather chair. Then he stopped buying, stepped back, and realized that the two styles are drastically different.  Feeling stuck, he e-mailed me and asked if I had any ideas to move the design along.

Now, as for style, I know this guy pretty well.. and his is a Ralph Lauren/Restoration Hardware/J.Crew world. Im thinking burnished leathers and warm woods, all mixed up with a bit of tradition and luxe - and fortunately that works with his profession, which is in finance. The only thing that doesnt quite fit is the chair, and so we need to make it disappear into the design, right? Would you like to see what I am sending him back?

First,  I think the palette should remain neutral because of the nature of his business. So far we have orange-toned woods and black, so incorporating pale warm grey walls, while creating a darker wall (black or dark grey) behind the desk will allow the space to breathe while giving that black chair a home. If he would like, he could incorperate a wall of black bookshelves behind his desk, like the third pic shows - this is my personal preference.

Adding accessories that have classic appeal but feel modern are the key to linking the modern lines of his desk chair and the classic design of his desk.

How about adding a little comfort for his clients? Lets repeat the caramel tones here, with some sumptuous leather and link it all together with a hard-working sisal carpet. Architectural prints keep everyone focused on the task at hand, which involves real estate.

What do you think? Masculine yet welcoming? Professional yet comfortable?

Keeping Heroku Awake

Keeping Heroku Awake

As an avid fan of Heroku Ive used it to host many websites, from very simple ones with a low amount of visits to very complex applications with a large amount of traffic.

However if you are creating your first website with Heroku you may run into a problem. Heroku uses Dynos to run your website, think of them much like a single processor. The more dynos you have the more processing power you have at your disposal. With Heroku you get 1 months worth of a single dyno use for free.

The problem comes when no one has visited  your site for an hour. After an hour your dyno will shut down to save Herokus resources. If someone then visits your site it will take 5-10 seconds to spool up the dyno and get it serving the users requests. This obviously causes a delay which as us web developers know, any unnecessary delays are unacceptable. Speed matters.

How to get around this?

The best way around this is to keep your Heroku app awake. For this I used the  Heroku scheduler add-on:

This works much like a Cron Jobs but has a few additional features.

First, add Heroku Scheduler to your desired app. Then go to the admin for that application and enter the Heroku Scheduler management area from the Add-on drop down menu

This screen is where we manage what tasks to run and when. Ive called this task Call_page as it will be simply calling our heroku apps index page. We will schedule it to run once an hour to keep the app alive.

We now need to add in the code for this task:

Make a new file called scheduler.rake in app/lib/tasks

Within this page put your code:

desc "This task is called by the Heroku cron add-on"
task :call_page => :environment do
   uri = URI.parse(http://www.myapp.org/)
   Net::HTTP.get(uri)
 end

As you can see this is a fairly simple bit of code that simply calls your page.

Thats all! Your app will now stay awake.

Is it free?

Most likely yes, with each Heroku app you receive 450 free hours of dyno time each month. As 1 dyno is always running this will leave you with a few hours of free dyno time each month. Heroku charges $0.05 per hour per dyno pro-rated to the nearest second. As this task takes around 5 seconds of dyno worker time thats 2 minutes per day, 14 minutes a week and 1 hour per month. Easily within your allowance.
