It was a shock. I read the mail late last night and it kept me up. This morning we gathered in a small screening room as a Story department for the formal announcement before the news goes out to the studio. Justing Wright passed away last night.

Justin was a very enthusiastic person and full of energy. Youd never guess that he had already gone through so much in life.

Justin’s journey to Pixar has another plot twist. He got introduced to the famous studio because of a heart transplant. When Justin was born, his heart had all sorts of complications: cardiomyopathy, a complete block, a hole between the upper two chambers, a hole in the mitral valve —the list goes on. Finally, when Justin was 12, his heart had been through too many surgeries and procedures to be of much use, not to mention that it was the size of a deflated soccer ball inside his slight 70-pound body. It was time for a transplant.

With a lot of time spent in hospital beds recovering, Justin drew pictures (a hobby he says he started as a kid when he got bored in church). His doctor at Stanford’s Lucile Packard Childrens Hospital noticed Justin’s interest, and one day, after Justin was fully recovered, took him on a tour at Pixar, where he had some connections. Justin was enthralled—this was what he wanted to do.

I didnt get to work alongside Justin and my memories with him are few. I do remember the day we, the Story Supes, met to decide on accepting Justin to the Pixar story crew as a full story person, no longer an intern. We put on long faces to fake him out and Mark Andrews said that it wasnt going to work out but we couldnt really continue with it and we just said, "Welcome to Story!"

He was so happy. He could hardly contain the energy in his lanky body and even promised that he would work hard and prove us right. He didnt really need to say all those things, we knew he had it in him and the months since then proved it all. I wish we had more time with him.

Our sincerest condolences to his family, our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Update March 24, 2008

A drawing I contributed to honor Justin last Friday when his family came to Pixar to visit with us. There were boards of his drawings, a sequence he did and caricatures of Justin. A Dave Matthews song (Justin was a huge fan) rendered by Plot Device, the Story band. Family, friends and co-workers spoke--Andrew Stanton spoke as well as John Lasseter himself--about the best of what Justin left us--his optimism, disposition to have fun and willingness to engage in all manner of debates (who will win, Superman or a Jedi?). We were his work family and we miss him.

About Justin Bieber Saw Escape:  You play Justin Bieber where you need to find ways to help the young popstar rescue his beloved Selina Gomez from an explosive finale.  Grab umbrellas, glue pots and other useful objects littered around the room to help you survive the traps in each room.  

Justin Bieber Saw Game Walkthrough starts here:
After the intro... (when you talk to Pigsaw and he wants to play a game, you can select any of the options).
You have to save Selina from the evil pig...

Grab the umbrella and the glue.
Exit the room.

You have 5 seconds before the spider catches you...
Use the glue on the floor so that the spider will be trapped.

Take the boxing shoe and the hook.
Take the rope from the wall.
Go out and enter the room of Chuck Norris!

Take the boxing gloves with shorts.
Take the nitroglycerine

Talk to Chuck Norris and then use the umbrella on him to hypnotise Chuck.
Talk to him again and listen to his stories... then select the option about shaving his beard.  He will then break the door open for you.

Jump through the hole in the door.

Take the boxing shoe, secret weapon, and remote control.
Take the robot pigsaw puppet.

Use the nitro on the puppet.
Open his mouth.  Throw the nitro into his opened mouth.
Close the puppet.
Use the 2 boxing shoes on the puppet
Use the boxing gloves and shorts on the puppet.
Use the remote control, then walk the puppet to the next room.

Enter the next room by going right.

Take the mattress.
Go right.

You need to be quick... use the paralyzer horn on Superman to stop him.
Grab the steel marvel and air pump.

Go right to Mc Donalds.

Take the soda.
Look at the soda then take the straw.
Load the straw with the steel marvel.
Tie the rope to the hook.
Use the rope-and-hook to get the yellow  Mc Donalds M.
Pick up the M then place it under the hole just left of the door.
Jump on the M, then use the loaded straw on the hole.
Great shot.
Now enter Mc Donalds.

Take the deflated basket ball, then inflate it with the air pump.
Take the deck of cards.
Look at the deck of cards and work out what card is missing...  For me it is the 8 of spades.  This will be the card that Pigsaw has that you need to guess in the next room.
(Hint: I found the easiest method is to count the ones - there must be 4, then twos, threes, etc. until you find which number is missing.  Then determine the suit)

Go right.

Talk to the TV then find the missing card that Pigsaw has... 8 of spades for me (check for your missing card in the pack of cards)

Go right.

Place the mattress on the floor on the right.
Jump on the trampoline, and throw the basketball into the hoop...
(You need good timing to get it right)

Go right.

Press the red button to turn the cube.  Notice the numbers.  Press again so that you get the 4 numbers:
yellow 8, green  5, red 3, blue 6
Order:  Green, Yellow, Blue, Red (as per the letters over the left door)
So, 5863
Use the keypad and ente r the code then press OK.

Well done on solving Justin Bieber Escape Game.
